National Waterfowl Week at Chincoteague Wildlife Refuge

National Waterfowl Week at Chincoteague Wildlife Refuge runs from the Saturday before Thanksgiving to the Sunday after Thanksgiving. On Chincoteague Wildlfe Refuge, the wildlife loop is open to vehicles all day. This a once a year opportunity to have vehicle access to the service road which extends northward into the refuge. This rare access allows visitors to get a close up view of many of the hidden ponds. The area is also known as a great spot to see the wild ponies, deer and other wildlife.

For more birdwatching and nature seeking options, visitors can charter a nature tour by boat. These boat trips take bird watchers, pony enthusiasts and nature lovers into the back waters that surround Chincoteague and Assateague Islands. Ducks, geese, brant, swans, loons, gannets, marsh hens, plovers, and many other birds can be seen quite differently via nature tours, eco-tourism cruises and specialized boat charters.
